Mermaid Parade 2014
The Coney Island Mermaid Parade Portraits of 2014.
The Mermaid Parade of June 2014 was a great show,
On the road to the show along the way I notice how fine the weather is cool not hot and sticky like the weather we are mostly used to see in NYC. As I walk over here it’s not too far from the pier, I was about a month ago, there are many rides over here, but the roads are all blocked so the people can see, and the parade can pass.
Arriving at surf ave and 21st, to see things being put together, it was quite interesting the way the cars and bikes were presented along the way many people came in the ave where the registration boots were.
A Brief History:
The Coney Island Mermaid Parade takes place every year in Coney Island, New York in mid-to-late June.
The tradition of the Coney Island Mermaid Parade began in 1983, when the first event of this kind was conceptualized and organized by Dick Zigun, who is sometimes dubbed the “Mayor of Coney Island”, and who was the founder of the non-profit arts group Coney Island USA.
The Mermaid Parade is held in celebration of the beginning of the summer season, and so it traditionally takes place on the Saturday closest to the calendar start of summer, regardless of the weather. The last six parades (up to 2013) were held on June 21, 2008; June 20, 2009; June 19, 2010; June 18, 2011; June 23, 2012; June 22, 2013. The 2014 parade is to be held on Saturday June 21st, starting at 1 pm.

The Mermaids were beautifully in their costume(s) both women and men. The energy was very nice with everyone that I came in contact with, it was a very exciting day with the colorful floats across the board with lots of joy and happiness, that is what this event was really about, the colors the love for it and to show how creative the people can be.
As the morning progressed more costumes were a delight as photog’s started to push the limits of their machines.
The morning light that is harsh was something of a challenge to deal with something that I don’t normally have to deal with since I love early before sunrise and after sunset light.
Anyway, as the hrs went further up the line into the evening, the parade went to the broad walk where it came to an end. 👣
